Dream and Promise Act

TEXAS — On Tuesday, June 4, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Dream and Promise Act in a 237-187 vote, sending the legislation to the U.S. Senate. This law would open a path to permanent residency for millions of people who benefit from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Temporary Protected Status, and Deferred Enforced Departure.

The following is a statement from Cristina Tzintzún Ramírez, founder and executive director of Jolt, Texas Latino voter organization:

This is a huge victory for our immigrant youth. I am glad the House did the right thing and passed the Dream and Promise Act, providing a path to permanent residency for millions of immigrants who strengthen, enrich and bring diversity to our country.

“Now the GOP-controlled U.S. Senate must listen to the American people, who overwhelmingly support the protection of our migrant youth, and bring this legislation to a vote. If conservatives truly are the party of family values, they will support Dream and Promise Act to ensure millions of families remain together in the safety of the United States.

“Not surprisingly, immigration will be a key issue during the 2020 election and top-of-mind for many Latino voters in Texas. We are living in the epicenter of the immigration crisis. We want real solutions, not campaign rhetoric, because our community deserves a viable pathway to citizenship.”

Jolt is the largest Latino progressive organization in Texas, focused on building the political power and growing the influence of young Latinos.
