Austin, TX, Jan. 15, 2020 — Today, Jolt Action proudly endorses Mike Siegel to represent Texas’ 10th District in the United States House of Representatives.
Siegel, a civil rights lawyer, and former public school teacher, has served the community for 20 years as an educator to ensure equal opportunity for his students and as an advocate fighting for the rights of his clients.
The following statement is from Antonio Arellano, Interim Executive Director of Jolt Action:
“Mike Siegel is a people’s candidate and Jolt Action proudly endorses him for his work as a strong advocate for public education, fighting climate change, his plans to address the U.S. policies that led to the migration crisis and the systemic issues of mass incarceration, and his support of the Green New Deal framework proposed by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. We must stand up and help Mike Siegel go to Washington to fight for the policies that represent the best interests of all Texans.”
Siegel founded two nonprofit education agencies that continue to provide free after-school and summer programs to hundreds of children and youth 20 years after their founding. As an Austin city attorney, he represented the city in lawsuits against the State of Texas on behalf of immigrant families, firefighters, low-income renters and constituents in support of common-sense gun regulations.
Like every single one of our members, he envisions a U.S. where everyone, no matter their wealth or status, can fulfill the American dream.
“I see mass incarceration as part of the ‘New Jim Crow,’ a racist approach launched in part by the Nixon Administration to replace Jim Crow laws with the War on Drugs. To end mass incarceration, we must dismantle the institutions of white supremacy in the United States, including our racist criminal justice system,” Siegel said. “This is a massive project, and requires organizations like Jolt to lead the way, with allies and accomplices, of which I am one.”
Siegel is honored to have Jolt Action’s endorsement.
“Jolt is laying the foundation for progressive change in Texas by engaging and mobilizing young Latino voters,” he said. “I’m honored to have Jolt Action’s support as we build an unstoppable movement to replace Michael McCaul and win real representation here in the Texas 10th.”
