Austin, TX, Jan. 15, 2020 — Today, Jolt Action proudly endorses Ruby Powers to represent Texas House District 134.
Powers is running to ensure everyone has a voice in the Texas state house. She envisions a Texas where everyone feels safe, that works for everyone and that is ready for the future. She grew up in San Antonio and spent her childhood on both sides of the border. She never had insurance as a child and knew she had to create better opportunities for herself.
The following statement is from Antonio Arellano, Interim Executive Director of Jolt Action:
“Ruby Powers is the kind of leader who will guide us toward the 2020 and future we envision here at Jolt Action. Her voice resonates with our young Latino voters on everything from supporting federal student loan forgiveness and eliminating resource disparities among Texas schools, to decriminalizing unauthorized border crossings and advocating for universal healthcare for all Texans. We must stand up and help Ruby Powers go to the Texas House to fight for the policies that represent the best interests of all Texans.”
Powers specialized in immigration in law school because as a daughter and wife of immigrants, she knew she wanted to focus her career on helping people create greater opportunities for themselves, just as she did for herself. She opened her law firm, Powers Law Group and started a family with her husband in House District 134.
One of her focuses is to engage and motivate Latino voters.
“HD134 has approximately 19,000 Hispanic residents and about 8,000 Hispanic registered voters,” she said. “We plan to approach (Get Out the Vote) among our Hispanic voters in two ways. 1. Relational organizing that leverages personal connections among our supporters. 2. Digital and mail communications that take our message directly to Hispanic voters.”
Powers is honored to have Jolt Action’s endorsement.
“As the child of a Mexican immigrant — and as someone who has advocated for immigrants’ rights for more than 11 years — I am honored to receive Jolt Action’s endorsement for my campaign to serve as Texas District 134’s state representative,” she said. “I look forward to partnering with Jolt Action over the next several months to flip Texas House District 134 and increase the political power of Latinos in Texas. Together, we can transform our state.”
