TEXAS — President Trump’s proposed immigration reform released Thursday is codified racism thinly veiled as border security and immigration reform. The plan calls for increased scrutiny on cross-border traffic and moves toward a more exclusionary “merit-based” immigration system, which gives preference to highly skilled and educated individuals. The proposal omits discussion of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and offers no permanent solution for the 11 million undocumented immigrants already living in the U.S.
“Trump and his bigoted supporters are afraid that our country is changing and that soon we will become a nation where people of color make up the majority.
“Trump’s immigration plan seeks to prevent our country from becoming a diverse nation by focusing on a merit-based approach that excludes the most vulnerable of immigrants, who seek freedom and opportunity in our country.
“As a nation, we should embrace diversity, not run from it,” Cristina Tzintzún Ramírez, founder and executive director of Jolt Action.
Make no mistake: the debate about immigration is about race, civil rights and who we become as a nation. Our diversity is our strength, and no place better proves that than Texas. We are a state of 28 million people, where people of color make up the majority, fueled in large part by a growing young Latino and immigrant populations. Immigrants have helped make our state culturally and economically rich.
We need comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants whose lives are in limbo. We need real solutions, not political theater that seeks to limit legal migration and threatens to dismantle our values and beliefs. America must live up to its promise and remain a beacon of hope 一 not a symbol of discrimination and oppression.
