The following statement is from Antonio Arellano, the Interim Executive Director of Jolt:
“We denounce the deep-seeded hatred and white supremacy that killed George Floyd and countless victims like him. Jolt Action fully supports Black Lives Matter’s fight to end systemic racial injustice. Floyd’s death should be a clear reminder to our community and members that systemic racial injustice and white supremacy are the same forces behind the persistent racist attacks on young immigrants sustained throughout the Trump administration – forces that unfettered will continue to deny human rights, oppress and fuel violence against communities of color.
“We’re committed to building a democracy that works for everyone and we believe Black Lives Matter. At its core, Jolt’s fight is to stamp out racial, economic, and systemic injustice experienced by marginalized parts of our communities. Our fight is in solidarity – to summon the power of the Black and brown communities, to create a society and a democracy in which the experiences of these communities are equally valid and valuable.
”Dismantling the anti-Blackness that persists in our society requires not only that we demand wide-spread systemic changes, but also that each one of us submits to rigorous self-evaluation and self-reflection to identify and challenge our own biases and prejudices. As an organization, Jolt is committed to continuously solidifying Black and brown solidarity through ongoing anti-Blackness training for all team members and by advancing our partnership with the NAACP.
“Jolt will be supporting reforms that will re-imagine justice throughout Texas. Jolt will work collaboratively with leading Black voices in our state and across our country to amplify their messages. Jolt will engage, and educate its members on the importance of fighting to defend our Black community members.”
Founded in 2016, Jolt Action is a progressive civic engagement organization focused on building the political power and influence of young Latinos in Texas. Jolt Action’s initiatives are focused on community organizing, leadership development, voter engagement, and multi-issue advocacy. Through these efforts, Jolt Action serves to elevate the community’s collective voice to engage and transform our democracy. Jolt’s high school and university chapters across the state mobilize around issues such as student debt, racial and immigrant justice, healthcare reform, and climate change.
