Texas — The following is a statement from Jolt Action’s Interim Executive Director Antonio Arellano, on the House of Representatives’ historic vote today to impeach President Donald J. Trump for a second time. The House found that Trump incited insurrection last week prior to the storming of the Capitol, where five people died.
“Today marks an unprecedented moment in American history, as the sitting president is impeached for the second time. The pain and suffering this president has inflicted on our society and democracy is a tragedy that has tarnished our world standing, trampled on our values, and attempted to erode trust in our government.
“Donald Trump stirred up white supremacists and fascists with lies about the election, and he threatened the lives of more than 500 public servants in Washington D.C., their respective staff members, members of the press, and others who were in the Capitol on that day.
“Impeaching Trump for his role in last week’s riots should be considered the start of a long line of consequences he and his administration must endure for their crimes against our country, including those against our immigrant community. Beyond inciting violence last week, Trump has cruelly separated thousands of families under his failed immigration policy, put children in cages, and wreaked environmental havoc on our communities. His failure to lead the country during the COVID-19 pandemic has cost more than 380,000 lives, more than 30,000 in Texas alone, the majority of which have been people of color.
“The members of Texas’ Congressional delegation who voted against impeaching Trump have failed their constituents. Anything besides an affirmative vote to impeach is a dereliction of duty from our elected officials. They swore an oath to serve every Texan, and voting to keep a toxic, inhumane and unhinged president in power is breaking their oath to us, especially communities of color.
“As the matter now goes to the Senate, I call on our Texas Senators — including Senator Ted Cruz, who is equally guilty of inciting this insurrection — to vote to convict Donald Trump and do right by Texans. It’s time to leave this dark chapter in American history where it belongs — in the past, but we must do so by demanding accountability and justice. Insurrection has consequences, and in order to move forward and heal as a country, we must learn from and vow not to repeat the mistakes of our predecessors.”
