Supreme Court ruling on DACA a victory for young Latinos

TEXAS — On Thursday, June 18, 2020, the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration acted illegally when it attempted to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The following is a statement from Antonio Arellano, Interim Executive Director of Jolt Action, a Texas Latino voter organization:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a historic victory for immigrant youth across the United States. These hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients make America stronger, and deserve to live and thrive in the country they call home. It’s time for Congress to recognize the sacrifices these young immigrants have made for the opportunity to contribute to this country, even when lawmakers turned their backs on them.

“Texas is home to the second-largest population of DACA recipients in the United States. They are our family, friends, and neighbors. Many are currently essential works, and some are risking their lives in the medical field to protect Americans from COVID-19.”

“Today we renew our call to Congress: You must find the courage to finally provide a permanent solution to our Nation’s broken immigration system. Our leaders must pass legislation that creates a citizenship pathway for all undocumented immigrants.

“We will continue fighting for our undocumented community, who has overcome unimaginable obstacles to reach the American dream. Nearly one in three Texans are either immigrants or children of immigrants, and our diversity represents the future not only of our state but of the country. Together, we are stronger than the Trump administration’s racist attempts to strike fear into immigrant communities.”

Founded in 2016, Jolt Action is a progressive civic engagement organization focused on building the political power and influence of young Latinos in Texas. Jolt Action’s initiatives are focused on community organizing, leadership development, voter engagement, and multi-issue advocacy. Through these efforts, Jolt Action serves to elevate the community’s collective voice to engage and transform our democracy. Jolt’s high school and university chapters across the state mobilize around issues such as student debt, racial and immigrant justice, healthcare reform, and climate change.
