Texans Must Register By Jan. 31 to Vote in March Primary
AUSTIN, TX — Jolt Initiative, a non-profit organization that increases the civic participation of Latinos in Texas to build a stronger democracy and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard, is reminding Texans that Monday, Jan. 31 is the final day to register to vote in the Texas primary election on March 1.
The primary election is critically important as it will determine which candidates represent the major parties for the federal and statewide general election in November. For Latinos specifically, this is an important opportunity to ensure candidates who represent the best interests of the Latino community are elected to office.
“Voting is both a right, but it is also a privilege when we think of so many who had to fight for their rightful place in the ballot booth,” said Jolt Executive Director Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia. “Part of our work here at Jolt is connecting with high school and college-aged students to establish a life-long habit of voting in elections. Voting for a politician who stands up for the issues that matter to us is an important way to support our families and communities.”
Currently, in Texas, there are nearly 11 million Latinos, and half of all people under the age of 18 are Latino. By 2030, Latinos will be the majority in Texas. With this demographic shift comes the opportunity to organize millions of Latinos to fight for lasting change in the Lone Star State. Texas’s expansive geography makes this challenging — 254 counties, cities with populations the size of many states, and a total of 19 million eligible voters. Jolt Initiative is one of the only statewide organizations in Texas organizing young Latinos around the power of their voice, vote, and stories.
Texans can log onto the Jolt website and register to vote. Anyone who is already registered to vote should check their registration to confirm that their information is up to date.

“Votar es un derecho, pero también es un privilegio cuando pensamos en tantos que tuvieron que luchar por su legítimo lugar en la cabina electoral”, dijo la Directora Ejecutiva de Jolt, Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia. “Parte de nuestro trabajo aquí en Jolt es conectar con los estudiantes de secundaria y universitarios para establecer el hábito de votar en las elecciones para toda la vida. Votar por un político que defienda los temas que nos importan es una forma importante de apoyar a nuestras familias y comunidades.”
