Texas governor’s gun safety recommendations prove inadequate again

TEXAS ─ On Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, Gov. Greg Abbott released the Texas Safety Action Report in an effort to address gun violence in Texas. These legislative recommendations are riddled with half-measures and do not adequately rise to meet the magnitude of our current gun epidemic.

The following is a statement from Antonio Arellano, interim executive director of Jolt Action, a Texas Latino voter organization:

“In nearly two dozen executive orders and legislative recommendations, Gov. Abbott again failed to show the courage that Texans are demanding from our elected officials. Texas has experienced five mass shootings over the past three years. Families have been torn apart, and many are still actively mourning their lost loved ones due to his unjustifiable inaction. Yet Gov. Abbott still refuses to genuinely enact lifesaving measures such as: universal background checks for firearm sales and a ban on assault rifles, which have been used to terrorize communities in Texas.

“Instead, Gov. Abbott’s suggestions show he remains safely in the corner of the gun lobby rather than the Texans he is duty-bound to serve. He would rather have school children and everyday citizens take active shooter training than take weapons of war from domestic terrorists’ hands.

“It’s time for Gov. Abbott to call a special legislative session and let lawmakers get to work. We cannot wait until 2021 for change. Young voters will remember these traumatic events, and our state legislators’ refusal to act, come election day when they make their way to the ballot box.”

Jolt Action is the largest Latino progressive organization in Texas, focused on building the political power and growing the influence of young Latinos.
