Texas leaders should denounce Gov. Greg Abbott’s shameful rejection of refugees

TEXAS — On Friday, Jan. 10, 2020, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he would reject resettlement of refugees in Texas. The move makes Texas the first state to do so under a new Trump administration order.

The following is a statement from Antonio Arellano, interim executive director of Jolt Action, a Texas Latino voter organization:

“We strongly condemn this cowardly act of discrimination toward refugees. One in three Texans are either immigrants or the children of immigrants, and we know that our diversity is what makes us strong.  We call on our state elected officials to represent the true values of our diverse state and demand Gov. Abbott rescind his letter rejecting refugee resettlement. Texas should always be open to those who are fleeing inhumane or uninhabitable conditions.

“Greg Abbott is not only playing into dangerous, racist fears of people of color. Like his campaign against Austin’s homeless population, he is targeting another vulnerable group —  women and children fleeing from war in their home countries.

“The vast majority of Texans reject the inaccurate label of refugees as terrorists or criminals. We do not fall prey to fear or intimidation rooted in oppression.  Young Latinos, many of whom are immigrants or children of immigrants, are voting like never before and taking their fight against oppression to the voting polls to bring about the progressive change that Texas deserves.”
