Amigxs,
Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 1 into law. SB 1 targets those with language barriers or disabilities by creating criminal penalties for people trying to assist voters. The law eliminates drive-thru and 24-hour polling locations (both of which were popular with voters of color last year), and it also allows partisan poll watchers to intimidate voters. In a state where it is already difficult to vote, this law was intentionally designed to suppress the votes of Latino, Black, low-income, elderly, and disabled Texans.
As an organization that works tirelessly to ensure Latino voices are heard, this law is particularly heartbreaking — but we’re not giving up. Through relentless organizing, voter registration drives, youth leadership development, and advocacy, Jolt is leading the fight for voting rights in the state — but we can’t do it alone.
Amigxs, we need you to join the fight with us. Here’s how you can help: Apply for Levantate Leadership Institute and gain valuable organizing skills
Become a volunteer deputy registrar and help us ensure Latinos across the state can register to vote

In addition to our year-round voter mobilization efforts, Jolt has also joined the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) and other civil rights organizations to challenge this dangerous anti-voter legislation — we will not give up without a fight! Despite the massive obstacles in our way, I know that we can build a movement of powerful, civically engaged Latinos. Thank you for believing in this movement! In solidarity,
Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia, PhD Executive Director Jolt Action
