Jolt Action Condemns Supreme Court Decision Weakening the Voting Rights Act

AUSTIN, TX – Jolt Action strongly condemns today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Callais v. Louisiana, a decision that severely weakens one of the most critical protections for fair representation in American democracy.

For decades, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act has served as a cornerstone safeguard against laws and electoral maps that dilute the political power of Black, Latino, and other communities of color. Today’s ruling dismantles that protection, marking a dangerous shift that puts hard-fought progress at risk and opens the door for widespread voter suppression through discriminatory redistricting.

“Today’s decision is a direct attack on the foundation of our democracy and threatens to reverse generations of progress toward fair representation,” said Jackie Bastard, Executive Director of Jolt Action. “Section 2 has long been one of the most powerful tools we have to challenge maps and laws that silence Black and Brown voters. Weakening it puts millions at risk of being pushed out of the political process.”

Jolt Action warns that the consequences of this decision will be felt nationwide, from congressional districts to local governments, as state legislatures move to redraw maps that weaken the collective power of communities of color.

“This moment is a setback, but it is not the end of the fight,” said Bastard. “We will continue to organize, mobilize, and use every tool available to defend our communities and demand fair representation. Our democracy only works when every voice counts, and we will not allow that principle to be erased.”

Jolt Action remains committed to building the political power of young Latino voters and ensuring that communities across Texas and the nation have a meaningful voice in shaping their future.
