Jolt Action Demands Independent Investigation After ICE Agent Fatally Shoots Houston Father

HOUSTON, TEXAS — Following the fatal shooting of Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a traffic stop Tuesday morning, Jolt Action is calling for a full, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

ICE has claimed that Mr. Salgado Araujo attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against a federal agent. However, no public evidence has been released to support that account, and recent ICE-involved shootings across the country have raised serious questions after official narratives were later contradicted by video evidence.

According to his family, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for 35 years. He was a construction worker, a father of three, and was reportedly working to regularize his immigration status while supporting his family.

Jolt Action Deputy Director Maria Tolentino issued the following statement:

“A family has lost a father. A community is grieving. There must be a thorough, independent investigation that follows the evidence wherever it leads.”

“For far too many immigrant families, encounters with immigration enforcement have become moments of fear instead of public safety. When an ICE agent uses deadly force, the public deserves more than a press release. Texans deserve transparency, accountability, and facts.”

“Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was more than a headline or an immigration case. He was a father, a worker, and a member of our community. His family deserves answers, and the public deserves confidence that this investigation will be conducted independently and without bias.”

“The repeated use of claims that vehicles were ‘weaponized’ in officer-involved shootings, particularly when some past accounts have later been challenged by video evidence, underscores why independent oversight is essential. Accountability cannot depend solely on agencies investigating themselves.”

Jolt Action stands with Mr. Salgado Araujo’s family and the Houston community as they seek answers. The organization joins local leaders and civil rights advocates in calling for:

  • An independent investigation separate from ICE into the fatal shooting.
  • The public release of all available body camera, surveillance, and dash camera footage.
  • Transparency regarding the reason Mr. Salgado Araujo was targeted for arrest.
  • A complete accounting of the events leading up to the use of deadly force.
